Nutritional Counseling - What to Expect

Do you have questions about the supplements you are taking? Are you unsure of whether they are the right ones for you? Are you looking to lose weight?

Dr. Laura Kemps' nutritional counseling services may be right for you. Do you have a specific condition that needs to be addressed?. Did you know conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, headaches and eczema  can all be helped through changes in diet and specific supplementation?

What sets Dr. Kemps' services apart is that she treats people on an individual basis, and puts together a specific treatment plan of diet changes and supplementation based on blood work and other tests, as well as a thorough history taking and examination.  To learn more, here are some frequently asked questions regarding her services.

What can I expect on my first visit?

You will receive a 14 page health history to be completed prior to your first visit. The first visit is one hour long, and includes a review of your health history your goals for nutritional therapy.  Dr. Kemps then does a nutrition examination, looking at blood pressure, reflexes, skin, hair, nails, an abdominal exam, and any other tests she deems appropriate.  Typically, she then puts those findings together with any recent blood work or other tests you may have had done with your medical physician. Dr. Kemps may also recommend additional tests, which can range from more lab work with your medical provider to other  testing such as adrenal function testing, food allergy testing,  stool analysis, and others.  She then meets with you in one to two weeks when all the tests have been completed to go over her findings, called the "report of findings".

What is in the report of findings?

The report of findings, typically on the second visit, addresses your specific health goals as well as the problems Dr. Kemps found on your first visit.  It is a specific, individualized treatment plan of diet and lifestyle changes as well as supplementation to get you to your health goals.  Typically after the second meeting, you meet with Dr. Kemps once per month so she can assess your progress and trouble shoot any problems you may be having with the treatment plan.  These visits typically are 15-30 minutes each time.

What are the costs involved?

Dr. Kemp’s nutrition services are done on a cash basis as insurance rarely, if ever, covers nutrition services through a chiropractor.  The fee is $25 per 15 minute increment, so the first visit is $100.  Report of findings is an additional charge of $75.  Monthly visits then range from $25-$50 depending on how much time she spends with you.  Supplements purchased are in addition to this fee.

What if I have more than one condition/problem I want treated?

Dr. Kemps is trained to look at all the body systems as a whole, so you would be the perfect candidate for her services.  She will take into account all the different body systems and how they work together to put together the optimal nutrition schedule for you.

What are her qualifications?

Dr. Kemps has been a chiropractor since the year 2000.  She went to the University of Western States for her chiropractic degree and studied nutrition extensively while in chiropractic college. She was certified by the state of Wisconsin in nutritional counseling in 2007.  She completed a two year national board certification in clinical nutrition in 2013. She is the only Diplomate on the Chiropractic Board of Clinical Nutrition (D.C.B.C.N.) in the Fox Valley area.

What if all I want to do is a detoxification/cleanse?

Dr. Kemps needs to screen you to make sure you are a good candidate. This involves filling out the health history and a  15-30 minute appointment.  We will  then order the proper detoxification kit for you, and can get you started.

Snow Shoveling Tips For a Healthy Back

One of the more common causes of back injuries during the winter months is snow removal. Using the wrong body mechanics when shoveling snow can put undue stress on the lower back and lead to a painful muscle strain, or possibly more serious back injuries, such as a herniated disc or disc degeneration .
The following snow removal tips can help you to avoid low back injuries and pain during the snowy winter season.

Pick the Right Snow Shovel
An ergonomic snow shovel can help take some of the effort out of your snow removal chores. A shovel with a curved handle or an adjustable handle length will minimize painful bending, requiring you to bend your knees only slightly and arch your back very slightly while keeping the shovel blade on the ground. In addition, a small, lightweight, plastic blade helps reduce the amount of weight that you are moving.
Warm Up Thoroughly
Cold, tight muscles are more prone to injury than warmed up, flexible muscles. Do your back a favor by warming up for five to ten minutes before shoveling or any strenuous activity. Get your blood moving with a brisk walk, marching in place, or another full-body activity. Then, stretch your low back and hamstrings (the large muscles in the back of the thigh) with some gentle stretching exercises. Limber up your arms and shoulders with a body hug.
Pace Yourself
Shoveling small amounts of snow frequently is less strenuous than shoveling a large pile at once. If possible, removing snow over a period of days will lessen the strain on the back and arms. In deep snow, remove a few inches off the top at a time, rather than attempting to shovel the full depth at once. When shoveling, take a break for a minute or two every 10-15 minutes or if you feel overworked at any point. Use this opportunity to stretch your arms, shoulders, and back to keep them warm and flexible.
Use Ergonomic Lifting Techniques
Whenever possible, push the snow to one side rather than lifting it. When lifting the snow shovel is necessary, make sure to use ergonomic lifting techniques:
·         Always face towards the object you intend to lift (ie have your shoulders and hips both squarely facing it)
·         Bend at the hips, not the low back, and push the chest out, pointing forward. Then, bend your knees and lift with your leg muscles, keeping your back straight
·         Keep your loads light and do not lift an object that is too heavy for you
·         If you must lift a shovel full, grip the shovel with one hand as close to the blade as comfortably possible and the other hand on the handle (handle and arm length will vary the technique)
·         Avoid twisting the back to move your object to its new location – always pivot your whole body to face the new direction
·         Keep the heaviest part of the object close to your body at your center of gravity - do not extend your arms to throw the snow
·         Walk to the new location to deposit the item rather than reaching or tossing
When gripping the shovel, keep your hands about 12 inches apart to provide greater stability and minimize the chances of injuring your low back.
Keep Your Feet on the Ground
Slippery conditions while shoveling can lead to slipping and/or falls and strains that can injure your back. Shoes or boots with good treads will help to minimize injuries from slipping. Spreading sand, rock salt, or kitty litter on your sidewalk or driveway will increase traction and reduce the likelihood of slipping on the ice.
If Possible, Stop Shoveling – Use a Snow Blower Instead
When used correctly, a snow blower can put less stress on your low back than shoveling. Avoid stressing your back by using the power of your legs to push the snow blower while keeping your back straight and knees bent.
These tips can help to make snow removal less of a strain on your low back. Keeping these guidelines in mind during the winter season will lessen the chances of a developing new back problems or worsening your low back pain while shoveling, and hopefully make your winter a healthier and more enjoyable experience.

Aaron Rodger's Day - 12/12/12

Join us in celebrating Aaron Rodger's Day this Wednesday, 12/12/12.  This day came about because of the efforts of one of Aaron's fans named Jennifer Brilowski.  She started a facebook page for Aaron Rodger's day as a joke, and was amazed by the support and excitement generated by Packer fans around the world.

The efforts now include raising money for cancer research through the Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer  and the Go Bo Foundation .

Jen's goal is to raise $12012.00 for cancer research.  You can help by visiting one if the sites above and  making your contribution.  How about $12?

Our office staff will be wearing their Packer jackets and some new 12-12-12 pins we ordered to help support the cause.  We'll also be serving some green and gold treats.  Hope you can join us!
