Community Blood Drive - Help Someone You Know

Our offices will be participating in blood drives in March with the Community Blood Center.  The Neenah office's drive will be on Friday, March 8th from 1-4 p.m..  The Appleton office will have it's drive on Tuesday, March 19th from 8:00 to 11:30 a.m.  Please call either office to sign up!

We wanted to share with you why donating blood is so important.  Kathy Gertz is a member of our Appleton staff.  Her daughter Holly wrote to us about her experience donating and receiving blood:

"Donating blood is an extremely important thing! I have thought this from the first time I donated, in high school. I became a regular donor and was proud of the contribution I was making to my community; however I never thought I would be on the receiving end of blood. When I entered my junior year of college, I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and become quite ill. I was never able to control it which resulted the removal of my entire colon, also known as your large intestine. Over the course of four years, I received four complete blood transfusions and a round of iron infusions to help battle the weakness, fatigue, and general malaise I felt daily. I am now 29 and have received more blood transfusions over the years due to complications from surgery and other autoimmune disorders I have been diagnosed with.

Going from perfectly healthy to needing tests, blood transfusions, and even surgery is a scary thing. I can’t imagine if there wouldn’t have been people willing to donate their blood to help me carry on living a normal life by finishing college and becoming a teacher. If you are a healthy individual, I urge you from one former donor and receiver to donate blood!

I just turned 29, I currently teach 7th and 8th grade science, and I am fairly healthy living a normal life. This is due to the generosity of people in my community. My parents have also set a wonderful example, by being donors! One of my wonderful parents works at Schubbe Resch Chiropractic and Physical Therapy. "

We really appreciate Holly's willingness to share her story.  Let's all help by donating blood if we are able!

ALCAT Testing for Food Sensitivities - Ashley Zachor's Story

The following is a letter Ashley wrote to me - her dad - Dr. Nathan Zachor.  I wanted to share it with you because it shows the powerful information that can be gathered from food sensitivity testing.  We offer this service at Schubbe Resch as part of our nutritional counseling.  Please call our office if you are interested in checking to see if you have food sensitivities that are causing your health problems.

Hi, my name is Ashley!

I am 8 years old.  I have had tummy aches since I can remember.  In 1st grade, I had to stay in from several recesses because my tummy hurt so badly.  That was the worst!  I also had hives and sometimes boils.  Yuck!

My Mommy and Daddy took me to a special doctor in Milwaukee for my tummy issues.  That didn't work.  Although my parents were happy to have serious things ruled out.  Daddy then took me to the children's hospital to get a blood test  I was very brave.  I even got a stuffed animal.  He sent my blood labs to a place called ALCAT.

Then I was told that I couldn't eat corn, soy, blueberries, green and blue dyes, parsley, pears, cinnamon, bananas and lettuce.  I felt sad.  My Mommy and Daddy told me that I would only be doing this for a little while.

After a few weeks, I stopped having tummy aches!  My skin doesn't look like a teenager's.  I have been told by others that I behave really well these days.  And I am healthier than my brother and sister!  This makes me really happy, because I haven't always been the healthy one in the family.

It's been almost two months, and I am doing really well.  Thanks to my Daddy's testing, my Mommy's cooking, and my hard work eating the right foods.

Love,  Ashley

Dr. Laura Kemps Receives her Nutrition Diplomate!

Our offices would like congratulate Dr. Laura Kemps on the successful completion of her Clinical Nutrition Diplomate program.

This was a two year program that required a research paper, two case histories, 24 classes, and numerous exams.  Dr. Laura passed her annual exams as well as the National Board Exam for Nutrition.  She is now recognized as a certified nutritionist in addition to her chiropractic degree.

She will continue her education with additional nutrition seminars each year as well as requirements such as article reviews and more research papers.

To get a better idea of what nutritional counseling with Dr. Laura entails, please read the blog post - Nutritional Counseling - What to Expect.

Nutritional Counseling - What to Expect

Do you have questions about the supplements you are taking? Are you unsure of whether they are the right ones for you? Are you looking to lose weight?

Dr. Laura Kemps' nutritional counseling services may be right for you. Do you have a specific condition that needs to be addressed?. Did you know conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, headaches and eczema  can all be helped through changes in diet and specific supplementation?

What sets Dr. Kemps' services apart is that she treats people on an individual basis, and puts together a specific treatment plan of diet changes and supplementation based on blood work and other tests, as well as a thorough history taking and examination.  To learn more, here are some frequently asked questions regarding her services.

What can I expect on my first visit?

You will receive a 14 page health history to be completed prior to your first visit. The first visit is one hour long, and includes a review of your health history your goals for nutritional therapy.  Dr. Kemps then does a nutrition examination, looking at blood pressure, reflexes, skin, hair, nails, an abdominal exam, and any other tests she deems appropriate.  Typically, she then puts those findings together with any recent blood work or other tests you may have had done with your medical physician. Dr. Kemps may also recommend additional tests, which can range from more lab work with your medical provider to other  testing such as adrenal function testing, food allergy testing,  stool analysis, and others.  She then meets with you in one to two weeks when all the tests have been completed to go over her findings, called the "report of findings".

What is in the report of findings?

The report of findings, typically on the second visit, addresses your specific health goals as well as the problems Dr. Kemps found on your first visit.  It is a specific, individualized treatment plan of diet and lifestyle changes as well as supplementation to get you to your health goals.  Typically after the second meeting, you meet with Dr. Kemps once per month so she can assess your progress and trouble shoot any problems you may be having with the treatment plan.  These visits typically are 15-30 minutes each time.

What are the costs involved?

Dr. Kemp’s nutrition services are done on a cash basis as insurance rarely, if ever, covers nutrition services through a chiropractor.  The fee is $25 per 15 minute increment, so the first visit is $100.  Report of findings is an additional charge of $75.  Monthly visits then range from $25-$50 depending on how much time she spends with you.  Supplements purchased are in addition to this fee.

What if I have more than one condition/problem I want treated?

Dr. Kemps is trained to look at all the body systems as a whole, so you would be the perfect candidate for her services.  She will take into account all the different body systems and how they work together to put together the optimal nutrition schedule for you.

What are her qualifications?

Dr. Kemps has been a chiropractor since the year 2000.  She went to the University of Western States for her chiropractic degree and studied nutrition extensively while in chiropractic college. She was certified by the state of Wisconsin in nutritional counseling in 2007.  She completed a two year national board certification in clinical nutrition in 2013. She is the only Diplomate on the Chiropractic Board of Clinical Nutrition (D.C.B.C.N.) in the Fox Valley area.

What if all I want to do is a detoxification/cleanse?

Dr. Kemps needs to screen you to make sure you are a good candidate. This involves filling out the health history and a  15-30 minute appointment.  We will  then order the proper detoxification kit for you, and can get you started.

Three Easy and Healthy Super Bowl Appetizers

Super Bowl parties mean lots of friends, fun, and food.  Although you can't control what other people serve, you can bring some healthy appetizers to share that you know are full of low calories, high quality ingredients.  Give one or all three of these a try!

Here’s an easy and healthy “chips and dip” recipe to try this Super Bowl Sunday.  The chickpeas provide fiber and protein without a lot of calories.

You can impress your friends without  a lot of fuss with these mini tomato and mozzarella skewers.  Toothpicks will also work if you don’t have wooden skewers.  Consider serving with a variety of vinegars and oils for dipping.

Serve this easy 3 ingredient gazpacho in tall shot glasses garnished with cucumber sticks and cocktail shrimp for an unusual and eye-catching appetizer.
