Shoveling Alert!

Proper technique for pain free snow removal ahead!

Ergonomics and proper lifting technique for snow removal are very important for avoiding injury and low back aggravation.

First and foremost, if you have access to or have a neighbor with a snow blower, please use it.   It will save both your back and time when it comes to snow removal.

If you don’t have access to a snow blower, here are some things to keep in mind when shoveling:
1.       Shoveling is exercise, prepare accordingly (Warm up, don’t overdo it, listen to your body, etc.)
2.       Take breaks as needed and break the job up over time.
3.       Keep your core lightly engaged (squeezed) to help stabilize the spine.
4.       Shoveling is LIFTING and lifting requires proper ergonomics
5.       Bend at the waist and hips, your legs are much stronger than your low back.
6.       Avoid throwing the snow far distances and use more of a push method.
7.       If your low back starts to become tight and bothersome, stop and rest.
8.       If you notice discomfort upon waking the next morning you may have over done it and could benefit from a chiropractic adjustment to stop further aggravation.

Happy shoveling!

Introducing Sarah Pierre, PT

The Appleton office would like to welcome Sarah Pierre to our physical therapy staff!

In Sarah's words -

I was born and raised in Wisconsin.  Upon graduation from UW-Stevens Point, I entered the US Army and was fortunate to be assigned to the US Modern Pentathlon Olympic Training Team and competed in the event for three years.  During that time, I became well acquainted with the Physical Therapy staff due to training injuries.  Shortly after I retired from the sport, I attended the US Army-Baylor PT Masters program.  I spend most of my PT career in Texas and Arizona.  I recently relocated to Appleton to be closer to family.  I enjoy most outdoor activities but especially hiking, kayaking and paddle boarding.  I am excited to integrate my PT experience with Schubbe Resch Chiropractic clients.

Flexibility Training

Attention coaches, parents and athletes!

We want to share with you one of the best approaches to functional flexibility that we have experienced in over 20 years of clinical practice in physical therapy. We have worked with many athletes from a preventative and post injury status. We are truly amazed with the results and compliance we have observed using flexibility training. Most athletes hate to stretch, however if they understand that the greater range of motion available means a greater range to be strong in, their eyes light up!!!

Schubbe Resch Chiropractic & Physical Therapy is now offering individual, small group and team flexibility training. Please contact Kari Resch, PT for pricing and scheduling at resch.kari@yahoo.com.

This video will show you some examples of what this flexibility program includes:

Knee Pain in Females

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) refers to pain in the front of the knee and around the knee cap. While PFPS is considered an overuse issue that can occur in males and females, it is thought to be more common in females because of different joint alignment, movement patterns or strength deficits. It’s the most common condition reported in recreational runners and is often referred to as “runners knee.” However, it’s also common among active non-runners as well. This pain is common with activities like running, squatting, kneeling or going up and down stairs or after sitting for a long period of time.

In some cases of PFPS, there is weakness of the thigh or buttock muscles. In other cases, tightness of hamstrings or calves can increase compression under the knee cap. Certain jumping and running mechanics place extra strain on the knee joint and surrounding structures. As PFPS can be caused by weakness, tightness, or stiffness in the muscles that surround the knee, physical therapy treatment is based the specific findings of an individual’s examination. Treatment can include strengthening, flexibility, and manual therapy techniques. When leg alignment or movement patterns contribute to knee pain, patient education in improved mechanics for jumping or running, taping of the knee cap, knee bracing, or foot orthotics may be helpful.

Additional information on PFPS and it's management can be found at the American Physical Therapy Associations Move Forward PT website: http://www.moveforwardpt.com/SymptomsConditionsDetail.aspx?cid=f6dfe597-2f7d-4f1e-9aff-67694dca085f
