Chiropractic Services Beyond Adjustments

The focus on spinal adjustment is what makes doctors of chiropractic unique in their approach to treating patients.  The chiropractic adjustment, however, is not the only procedure a chiropractor may use in managing a patients care.

  • Heat and cold - Chiropractors may alternate between heat and ice therapy to help patients treat back pain.  Ice packs may be used for a 10-15 minute period and then switched with a heating pad to restore blood flow to the area and promote faster healing.
  • Exercise - Chiropractors may provide patients with instructions for an exercise program focusing on stretching and strengthening the back.
  • Massage - Chiropractors may massage the soft tissues to improve circulation, reduce swelling and inflammation, and encourage quicker healing.
  • Dietary management - Many chiropractors will provide patients with tips on how an improved diet may help with back pain and may recommend supplements after spinal manipulation.
  • Ultrasound - With ultrasound, sound waves create deep heat therapy that is applied to the soft tissues and joints.  Basically micro-massaging the soft tissues and joints, ultrasound therapy can help reduce pain, stiffness, and spasms. It can also increase blood flow and accelerate the healing process.
  • Electrical muscle stimulation - During this therapy, electrodes are placed on the skin and send light electrical pulses to different areas of the body with the purpose of reducing inflammation, curtailing muscle spasms, and relieving pain.
  • Traction - A chiropractic traction massage may include the patient lying face up as a system of rollers move about the back, all the while stretching and massaging the muscles in the back.
  • Cold laser therapy - With cold laser therapy, particles of energy are carried in a laser and absorbed by the cell membrane's photo receptors after penetrating the skin surface.  The cells and tissues then convert this light energy into biochemical energy, fueling a biological process that is believed to decrease swelling, reduce pain and inflammation, and improve circulation.
  • Pelvic stabilization - When leg-length deficiency, flat feet and/or subtalar instability are present, the chiropractor may place a small heel lift in the shoe on the short leg side and/or prescribe corrective arch supports to stabilize the pelvis.
So if your chiropractor recommends a service beyond an adjustment, you can rest assured that the service is meant to reduce your pain and speed your healing.

Good Posture Can Help Reduce Back Pain

Correct posture is a simple but very important way to keep the many intricate structures in the back and spine healthy.  It is much more than cosmetic - good posture and back support are critical to reducing the incidence and levels of back pain and neck pain.  Back support is especially important for patients who spend many hours sitting in an office chair or standing throughout the day.

Guidelines to Improve Posture:
For correction of poor posture, it is important to determine where improvement is needed, such as when sitting in an office chair.  Next, patients must work on changing daily habits to correct those areas.  This effort will improve back support and over time help decrease back pain and neck pain.  It will take some effort and perseverance, and will seem a little unnatural at first.  It is typical to feel uncomfortable, and even feel a little taller, but over time the new posture will seem natural and more comfortable.

Sitting Posture for Office Chairs
  • Be sure the back is aligned against the back of the office chair.  Avoid slouching or leaning forward, especially when tired from sitting in the office chair for long periods.
  • For long term sitting, be sure the chair is ergonomically designed to properly support the back and that it is a custom fit.
  • When sitting in an office chair at a desk, arms should be flexed at a 75 to 90 degree angle at the elbows.  If this is not the case, the office chair should be adjusted accordingly.
  • Knees should be even with the hips or slightly higher when sitting in an office chair.
Tips for Improving Posture and Ergonomics
  • Know the warning signs of back pain caused by poor ergonomics and posture.  Back pain may be the result of poor ergonomics and posture if the back pain is worse at certain times of the day or week (such as after a long day sitting in an office chair in front of a computer, but not during the weekend); pain that starts in the neck and moves downwards into the upper back, lower back and extremities; pain that goes away after switching positions while sitting or standing; sudden back pain that is experienced with a new job, a new office chair, or a new car; and/or back pain that comes and goes for months.
  • Get up and move. As muscles tire, slouching. slumping, and other poor postures become more likely; this in turn puts extra pressure on the neck and back.  In order to maintain a relaxed yet supported posture, change positions frequently.  One way is to take a break from sitting in an office chair every half hour for 2 minutes in order to stretch, stand, and walk.
Our offices provide on site ergonomic assessments and workplace wellness programs.  If you are interested in finding out more about proper office chair set-up, contact our Appleton office at 920-738-0200 or our Neenah office at 920-720-0660.

Holiday Stress Relief

Stress has a powerful effect on the body - involving both our mental and physical well being.  Aromatherapy and massage are great ways to ease stress.  Aroma means scent, and therapy means treatment.  Aromatherapy therefore is the use of the fragrant parts of aromatic plants to improve health and well being.  Lavendar, bergamot, marjoram, sandalwood, lemon, and chamomile are especially effective in relieving stress.

Massage, even a single session, can cause biological changes.  The stress hormone cortisol is decreased and white blood cells are increased to boost immunity.  Massage activates the body on an internal level to correct the imbalances caused by our stressful lives.

During this potentially stressful holiday time, we would like to offer you some stress relief.  The Neenah office will be offering foot and chair massages from 8-4 on Wednesday, December 12th. The Appleton office will be offering an aromatherapy station for you to try some calming essential oils during the week of December 17th to 21st.  Stop by either office for some much needed TLC!

September 2012 Massage Special

Read about why Brian regularly schedules massage:

"As a long time runner, 10 marathons including 3x Boston finisher and Ironman WI finisher, I’ve experienced my fair share of “runner’s injuries”. However, as I’ve moved up in age groups and am now considered a masters runner, I see fewer and fewer of my peers at the start line. Massage; I am confident in saying that without massage I would not be running marathons. In my mind, massage is equivalent to a regular oil change for a vehicle. Without regular oil changes the vehicle will run for a time but eventually lack of oil changes will catch up to a vehicle. As masters runners we can get by for some time without massage but long term, massage acts to prevent injuries extending our ability to run." ~Brian - Appleton, WI
