Healthy Holiday Eating Habits

Everyone struggles to not gain weight over the holidays.  There are treats at work, at family gatherings, and wherever you look. Although it is fun to indulge, it is not so fun to step on the scale come January 1st!  Here is a short list of tips you can use to help you get through the holidays with healthy eating habits.

  1. Make it a goal to maintain your weight during the holiday season rather than letting yourself gain weight.
  2. Exercise regularly to burn calories and to reduce holiday related stress.  Even committing to some extra walks around the block or taking the stairs will help.
  3. Enjoy your holiday favorites, but in moderation.  Studies have shown that the first few bites of any food are the most pleasurable, so have a few bites and then stop.  You won't be missing anything by not finishing - other than some more calories.
  4. Bring a healthy dish to gatherings so you know you will be able to eat something healthy.  You never know if others have used low or non fat ingredients, but you'll know that you did.
  5. Remember that the holidays are not a free pass to overindulge.  Maintain healthy eating habits whenever possible and eat sensibly at holiday gatherings.
  6. If all else fails, resolve to sign up for our "Six Weeks to Wellness" program after the holidays.  We will develop an exercise program specific to you and your goals.  The program is supervised by your chiropractor and is often covered by your insurance.

Holiday Stress Relief

Stress has a powerful effect on the body - involving both our mental and physical well being.  Aromatherapy and massage are great ways to ease stress.  Aroma means scent, and therapy means treatment.  Aromatherapy therefore is the use of the fragrant parts of aromatic plants to improve health and well being.  Lavendar, bergamot, marjoram, sandalwood, lemon, and chamomile are especially effective in relieving stress.

Massage, even a single session, can cause biological changes.  The stress hormone cortisol is decreased and white blood cells are increased to boost immunity.  Massage activates the body on an internal level to correct the imbalances caused by our stressful lives.

During this potentially stressful holiday time, we would like to offer you some stress relief.  The Neenah office will be offering foot and chair massages from 8-4 on Wednesday, December 12th. The Appleton office will be offering an aromatherapy station for you to try some calming essential oils during the week of December 17th to 21st.  Stop by either office for some much needed TLC!

Dr. Weyenberg Completes FAKTR Certification

What is FAKTR?

FAKTR (pronounced FACTOR) is a concept, not a technique. The acronym stands for Functional and Kinetic Treatment with Rehab. Approximately 9 years ago, Greg Doerr, DC and Tom Hyde, DC began to experiment with treating soft tissue/fascial disorders through the use of instruments. Both Greg and Tom trained in a variety of soft tissue techniques including instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) and decided to incorporate their previous training into a concept that included function and treatment of the kinetic chain while utilizing various forms of rehabilitation at the same time. They also incorporated treatment in the position of provocation (pain, loss of range of motion, feeling of tightness within the fascia/soft tissues) and during motion.   FAKTR incorporates all of the above variations to evaluate and treat soft tissue/fascial conditions. These concepts are quick to apply, easy to grasp and produce rapid results.

This certification also allows Dr. Weyenberg to perform Kinesio Taping.  You can learn more about Kinesio Taping on our website.

Dr. Tony Weyenberg practices at our Neenah office and can be reached at 920-720-0660.
