Biofreeze Pain Relieving Gel

What is Biofreeze?

Biofreeze is a blend of inactive ingredients such as alcohol and herbal extracts, along with the active ingredient - menthol.

How does Biofreeze work?

Biofreeze relieves short term pain by stimulating specific sensory receptors in the skin.  This blocks other receptors from sending pain signals to the skin.

Biofreeze produces pain relief through the use of a process called cryotherapy.  Also known as "cold therapy", cryotherapy is the application of cold to decrease inflammation and relieve pain.

The most popular form of cryotherapy is the use of ice.  But when applied to sore muscles, ice can cause negative side effects like stiffness, decreased range of motion, decreased motor performance, and skin irritation.

Biofreeze pain relief produces the same sensation of cold that accompanies icing, but patients may remain active during treatment.  Biofreeze works on the injured area to reduce skin temperature, reduce blood flow, lessen inflammation, and allow the body to repair itself more quickly.

How do I apply Biofreeze?

Biofreeze comes in three formats - Roll-on for effective delivery to smaller muscles, Spray for application without direct body contact, and Tube for hands on massage.

Book Recommendation - "A Minute of Margin"

“I recommend a book by Dr. Richard Swenson, MD called “A Minute of Margin” for those people who don’t have margin in their lives. It is a book that has 180 daily reflections that take only a minute to read to help us restore more balance into our busy lives.

The reflections cover a variety of strategies for creating more margin in our lives with a brief prescription and quote at the end of the reflection for that day.”

Stott Pilates with Stephanie Emenecker

Stephanie  has been a Pilates practitioner since 2003 when she began her study to help  gain core strength with her husband who was experiencing back pain due to golf and running.  Experiencing firsthand the  body and mind benefits Pilates provides, she has found her passion in the  practice and teaching of Pilates. She has recently completed both her Intensive  Mat-Plus and Intensive Reformer training through STOTT Pilates and will be  offering private Reformer sessions this fall as well as teaching our group  Traditional Pilates Mat and Reformed Mat classes at the studio.
Benefits of STOTT PILATES
  • Increase muscular tone and endurance
  • Combine strength with flexibility
  • Develop balance and coordination
  • Improve posture and alignment
  • Boost core strength and stability
  • Refine athletic performance
  • Heighten body awareness
  • Relieve stress and back pain
  • Prevent injury

What is a  Reformer?

In keeping with its adaptable  nature, Pilates is quite effective done as a simple, mat-based workout,  however, by introducing various pieces of Pilates equipment into your routine  you will add variety and intensity to your program.

The Reformer is probably the most utilized  piece of equipment in Pilates training. Gliding back and forth on rollers,  using springs rather weights for resistance, the Reformer provides gradual  resistance as your muscles contract, delivering the ultimate workout while  minimizing stress on tendons and ligaments. Using a top of the line STOTT  PILATES Reformer, your Pilates workout is enhanced with:
  • Eccentric and concentric muscle contraction for long, lean muscles
  • Three dimensional movement
  • Total musculo-skeletal conditioning (muscles and postural alignment)
  • Facilitates core conditioning and peripheral mobility
Multiple attachments can  be added to the Reformer to accommodate a wide variety of exercises and body positions.  Your final result is a total  body workout that builds muscle, conditioning, toning and cardio endurance.
Private Reformer Session Pricing:
  • $50 1 hr session
  • $225 5 session package
  • $450 10 session package
Call our front desk (920) 720-0660 for scheduling and purchase of private sessions.

About Pilates  & STOTT PILATES®

Developed in the early 20th  century by German-born gymnast, Joseph Pilates, pilates has been, and continues  to be the exercise of choice for dancers, athletes, and celebrities due to the  resulting long, lean muscles and greater flexibility that are typical of  regular practitioners of pilates. A non-impact exercise that balances the building of muscular strength with flexibility and proper body alignment
and balance, pilates is suitable for virtually everyone from prenatal/postnatal women, rehab patients and the elderly to top- performing  athletes and performers.

First developed in 1988 by Moira Merrithew and Lindsay G. Merrithew, alongside a team of physical therapists, sports medicine and fitness professionals, STOTT PILATES is a contemporary approach to pilates that marries the fundamentals of developing core strength and flexibility used in traditional pilates with the modern principals of exercise science and spinal rehabilitation. The combined knowledge and ongoing research into these varied health disciplines result in one of the safest, most effective and most
adaptable forms of exercise and muscle conditioning available for everyone, especially those with back problems or other medical restrictions
. This makes STOTT PILATES uniquely suitable to most any individual looking for a safe and effective means of improving the way one looks and feels. Dubbed 'the professional's choice', it is the most well-respected style of pilates available due to its safety and effectiveness for all levels of practitioner.

What is a foam roller?

A foam roller is a cylindrical piece of hard foam.  There are fancy foam rollers available on the internet and in sporting goods stores, but a basic, inexpensive foam roller will work just as well.

How does foam rolling work?

The roller is used to apply pressure to sore spots or trigger points in the muscles using bodyweight.  Common areas to target are the large, overused muscle groups in the upper and lower extremities.

What are the benefits of foam rolling?

Foam rollers allow you to self massage soft tissues for injury prevention and treatment.  The massage increases blood flow and circulation.

Who shouldn't foam roll?

Before starting a foam rolling program, you should consult with a medical professional as there are certain individuals that should avoid foam rolling.

The Health Benefits of Cycling

I am a great fan of cycling as a form of exercise. My wife and I routinely go for 30+ mile rides on the weekends and they spent a week cyling in Italy in October of 2011.

Here are some of the healthy reasons I like cycling:
  1. Cycling provides a fast and energetic work out.
  2. Cycling provides definite shaping, toning and firming of the thighs and calf muscles.
  3. Cycling helps burn fat which is then replaced by muscle.
  4. Cycling is a non-impact exercise which places less stress on the knees and ankles than running or other aerobic exercises.
  5. Cycling facilitates blood circulation throughout the body, which carries oxygen-rich blood to all the muscles.
  6. Cycling can also be used as a stress-buster activity!
Be sure to wear a helmet and obey all the rules of the road to enjoy a safe ride!

St. Joseph's Food Drive - March 2012

March is National Nutrition Month, and we are helping out by holding a food drive at our Appleton and Neenah offices to benefit St. Jopseph's Food Pantry.  The drive starts today - March 5th - and will run through Friday, March 30th.

We have collection barrels in the waiting rooms, and St. Joe's has even provided us with bags for you to fill and bring in.

Since we are focusing on nutrition this month, we are encouraging you to donate healthy, non-perishable foods.  We have suggestions for you in our waiting room.

Any patient who does make a donation can enter a drawing to win $50 of credit towards services in our offices!
